Amir Khan Thinks He Can Beat Crawford With Speed
What Khan Thinks
Amir Khan (33-3, 20 KOs) thinks that he is going to pull off a big upset against Terence Crawford (30-0, 25 KOs) because of his speed, size and experience. Their fight will take place on April 20th at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The 32-year-old Khan doesn’t want to chase Crawford around for 12 rounds. Instead he wants to fight it out like real boxers. Khans admits that he is the underdog in this fight but also says that he will prove everyone wrong by beating Terence.
“I think I’m a different fighter than the other fighters he’s faced,”
Khan said to Helen Yee Sports.
“First of all, he’s moving up to 147. He’s had one or two fights in the division against lower caliber fighters, who I would probably beat myself as well. I just feel he’s fighting the best fighter in the division at this time. He’s going to be tested. I’ve got the speed, the power, I’ve got the explosiveness, and I’ve got the size,”
Crawford Is Not The Best At 147
Terence has been tested properly ever since he came up to the Welterweight weight class. He has beaten Jose Benavidez Jr. and Jeff Horn but both of those are not great fighters and not considered the best.
“This is going to be one of the first times I’ve gone into a fight as an underdog, but as the bigger guy,”
“Normally I go into the fight as the smaller guy and the underdog. In this fight I’m the underdog, but I’m the bigger guy. I’ve got more experience, and I probably have the better resume. I know Terence is unbeaten, and he has a great resume and looked good in his recent fight, but I feel this is a little bit too much for him. He is quite new in the welterweight division. I feel I have the speed, power and experience to introduce him to the welterweight division and show him what the welterweight division is all about,”
Do Promoters Want This Fight?
The thing is, Crawford is a great fighter and his promoters try to match him with the best fighters. The way we are going to see Tyson Fury vs Tom Schwarz on June 15. The same way promotion company has been matching Crawford with someone unbeaten. He would have to beat someone like Errol Spence or Keith Thurman to prove himself in the Welterweight weight class.
“He’s up there in the top five in the pound-for-pound,”
Khan said about Crawford.
“There are a lot of great fighters in boxing. He’s up there. I don’t have him at #1 or #2. He is very dangerous. He is very tough to beat, but I really believe I have the skills and the tools to do that. I don’t think Crawford has proven himself in the welterweight division as of yet. To beat him will be even harder, but I believe I can do this,”
How To Beat Crawford
To be able to beat Crawford, Khan will have to be really aggressive like he was with Phil Lo Greco. Its important to go fast at Terence with speed. Throwing single shots at him isn’t going to do any good. You need to go at him with combos. Crawford really struggle with such kind of boxing style. Crawford is good at counters against single punches. Khan will have to throw some body shots along with jabs to take on Terence.
“I was at the top before. I can be back at #1, I believe, and I want to be back there again,”
“To do this, I have to beat Crawford. I was motivated against Canelo, but he was the bigger guy. He just put me with a big shot and put me away. In this fight against Crawford, I have to be in my best shape ever. I can’t make any mistakes against him. He’s up there as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, he’s dangerous and unbeaten,”
Khan Needs To Prove Himself Yet Again
In 2011, Khas was considered as one of the best fighter at 140lb but he was never #1 and when he tried to become that, he lost two fights back to back. If Khan beats Crawford, he won’t be becoming #1 at 147lb. Because he is not the best in this weight class. To be able to become #1, Khan will have to beat Spence and Thurman. But beating Crawford will definitely get him those fights.
“Everyone is thinking he’s going to win quite easily, but this is where I can cause a big upset,”
Khan said about the boxing world thinking Crawford is going to beat him.
“This is my time. This is the peak of my career. Physically, I feel stronger. I have speed on my side. When I compare myself to where I was at three to four years ago, I feel a lot better now than I did. This is going to be a tough, don’t get me wrong. There are times where we’re going to have to dig deep. Crawford is one of those fighters who is going to come to fight. If he wants to come fight me, I’m always going to be there, standing there. If he wants to come forward, there’s going to be a lot of exchanges. I prefer he come to me so he’s not running,”
“I can’t see myself stopping Crawford,”
“I see it going the distance, and me winning on points. I feel like I’m the better boxer of the two, and I can take it all the way to the end and win on points. It’ll be amazing to be the WBO champion and to beat a pound-for-pound fighter. God has given me this chance to get one win to where I need to be rather than having three or four fights. If he make me chase him, and I catch him and he’s countering me and he’s too quick and too sharp, then it’ll be a hard fight,”
It is possible for Khan to knock out Crawford. You just need to hit a lot rather than hard. And Khan has a long way to become #1 at 147 until he beats the top 2.
